Patreon aka Internet Panhandling

Balzak802
Patreon always kind of bothered me because it is just telling content creator's viewers to just give them money so they don't have to get a really job or spend their own money. I mean why don't they just have a Paypal button and tell people click there if you want to support? But what really irked me today to make this post was when I saw this video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gsvx5YsISMQ

In case you can't click on the video, it is Petedorr's new Patreon pitch. I just don't understand why he of all people would start resorting to Patreon. I mean, isn't that why he went back to college again to get a second degree? So he can get a degree that will actually land him a stable job and not resort to Patreon.

Also as the guy that is know for videos showing what games he got, wouldn't it be hypocritical to show what games he got with money that literally came out of the pockets of the people watching said video. I don't know but it really irked me big time to see Petedorr lower himself to the Patreon bar. I mean I liked his videos because he was always doing it because he wanted to do it but to now see this.

But what really needs to happen is another MCC. Just because I need to hear what the Mondo Cool Gang has to say about this.

It's a touchy issue.  On the one hand I don't have a problem with people choosing to give money to retards on the internet.  What really bothers me is it's only the big channels that definitely do get money form ads already.  I've considered a Patreon for MCTV.  My pitch would be something like.

"For season 3 I need these games, this specific hardware and it costs this much.  I will buy all this bullshit on my own, eventually, because I make very little at my terrible call center job.  If you enjoyed season 2 and would like to help either by donating games on this list or tossing a few bucks towards to goal it will help make it happen faster.  And here are some lame extras you get for helping."

I don't feel bad doing that because none of my shit has ads on it so I'm not double dipping which is really what bothers me.  The people subscribing to patreon are also the dip shits that disable adblock for their internet heroes.  So I would definitely point out that my shit is not ad supported and is a labor of love that I will do regardless of internet shekels or how long it takes me to make it happen.  And the subscription aspect also bothers me a little bit.  I've received generous as fuck gifts from people that listen to the show and watch my youtubes.  I've even had a few cash donations through the paypal link on the website.  So I'm not totally against it.  But man the balls it would take to think you deserve a fucking subscription for your shitty youtube videos.

I may just make that same pitch but with the paypal donate button on the site.  Those have been on the internet for fucking ever and no one has a problem with them. So I might make a page on the site with a check list of shit needed.  Like for season 2 there's still a few games I need to play and beat.  Zone of the Enders Fist of Mars on GBA for example.  That might actually be the only one I need.  But I'm broke as fuck for the next few months probably as I catch up on all the shit I over spent on during the summer and getting the camera and starting to build the studio and shit.

Another thing I want for the show is a multitap for the SNES.  Ideally the Japanese Bomberman one because it's for a Bomberman episode that will be in early season 2.  I would like to actually have a 4 player match with Bomberman GB on the Super Gameboy.  But have you seen how expensive SNES multitaps are?  I can't afford that shit for several months.  So I'll stick that on the back burner.  I'd like to record some gameplay of that 4 player match, record some video of me and the homies playing it and all that good shit.  But the prices on the multitaps man...The shitty American one is about the same price as the awesome Japanese Bomberman's head one.  Insane.
And by awesome I mean totally sweet.

Yeah, I don't have a problem with a donation idea like yours where you need money for a few games that are necessary for a specific episode of MCTV. What just irked me to create this post was when Petedorr created a Patreon specifically to create videos of games he probably already owns. Also, Pete does not seem like the kind of guy that is hard up for cash. That is unless he completely screwed himself over with taking out huge college loans which at that point, why don't you sell parts of your collection if you are that desperate for money?

So my problem is not that people ask for a small donation from Paypal but when they feel that they need to be handed a consistent paycheck along with the ad revenue that they are already making from their videos.

I don't know what is going through Youtubers heads these days when it comes to money. All I do know is that I have not once contributed to a Patreon account and never plan on doing. Maybe one day when I have a decent paying job, I will throw a few bucks down to a few Paypal accounts as thanks for giving me hours of free entertainment. That is how it should be done instead of me having to give someone a consistent paycheck.

Glad to see you back to make your yearly forum posts too Deathadder.

As of an update to Petedorr's Patreon, he is only at $202. His pitch has been made for almost a month and he was only able to rake in that much. People probably realized how much of a rip off it is since he rarely released any videos this year. So at least some people are not that gullible with their money.

I have a depressing story for you Death Adder.  I was going to have God damn Bithead 1000 on the show.  he agreed to it and everything.  This was right around the time he disappeared from youtube again.  It's been what a little over two months since he's posted anything?  God damn shameful.  But yeah man I need to install my DJ software.  I'd like to get an audio mixer and do shit better than I have been in the past.  But man.  So many projects so few dollars.

Having marathoned every one of his videos he has vanished for long periods of time before.  So I hope he comes back bigger and better than ever.  I hope his move into the basement didn't cause a fight with his wife that put his fist through her face.
And by awesome I mean totally sweet.

None of this matters. You all know it. Deciding whether to contribute to a person's patreon is about how much you like a person (or the personality they present).

bithead has a patreon. He has a three story house, a yard, a dog, and a kid. He made those decisions. He has to claim responsibility for them. I watched the vid Ballz presented, and many of the commenters were like, 'Just sell your shit'. If bithead truly was short on pay property taxes, he could sell Sapphire or the rest of his diamond-line Turbo library, using that reasoning.

Anyone opening a Patreon should say it's a tip jar. The money helps here and there, games, channel, or not. I watch one guy who donates plasma to get all his gear. He'd like to do YT fulltime, but he hasn't started a Patreon.

I think the main problem YT'ers face is that they start by giving away the majority of their content for free. Moving to a pay model after that on the premise of it pays for living expenses always seems treacherous. I think bithead realizes this too since he doesn't promote his patreon.
